Shaw dates its formation to 1967, when a holding company was organized to acquire Philadelphia Carpet Company, and it went public as Shaw Industries, Inc. in 1971.^{Source 4} The family roots go back further. Robert and J.C. Shaw were born in Dalton, Georgia, to the owner of Star Dyeing Co., a subcontractor to the carpet industry. Which Shaw Flooring Families Exist, and What Is Each For?

For hardwood and vinyl in a home, the Shaw family comes down to four names: Shaw Floors hardwood, Shaw Floors luxury vinyl, Anderson Tuftex and COREtec. Shaw's corporate portfolio is wider than that. It also includes commercial flooring brands such as Patcraft, Philadelphia Commercial and Shaw Contract, carpet under Shaw Floors and Anderson Tuftex, and businesses beyond flooring such as Shaw Sports Turf.^{Source 1} We carry engineered hardwood and luxury vinyl plank only, so that's where this review focuses.

Shaw Floors hardwood: Repel and the core hardwood line

Shaw's consumer site groups its hardwood into two lines: Repel and Shaw Floors Hardwood.^{Source 6} Repel is a splashproof finish, and Shaw says it makes the floor 2X more water resistant than traditional hardwood (its own comparison; the page doesn't describe the test).^{Source 7} Repel's warranty is careful to add that the floor is water resistant, not waterproof.^{Source 8}

If an older review sends you looking for Floorté, Floorté Pro or Floorté Classic, those names are retired. Shaw now calls its lines Luxury Vinyl Classic Series and Luxury Vinyl Pro Series, and says the products themselves are unchanged.^{Source 9}

Is Shaw Flooring High End?

Not in the luxury sense. Shaw Floors is a mainstream brand with a few premium styles at the top, and the catalog numbers show it.

The clearest marker is veneer, the real-wood layer on top of an engineered hardwood — what this means plank. In our catalog, 176 of 190 Shaw hardwood SKUs (93%) carry a 1.2 mm face veneer and 14 (7%) carry a 4 mm veneer, the thickness offered by Expressions. Where Is Shaw Flooring Made?

Shaw hardwood is mostly made in the United States, and Shaw luxury vinyl is mostly made in Vietnam. These counts come from the country-of-origin field in Shaw's product data for the SKUs we carry, so they describe our catalog rather than every Shaw product sold everywhere.

Country of origin tells you where a floor was made. It doesn't, on its own, tell you how a floor will wear, which is what the wear layer, finish and warranty speak to. If domestic manufacturing matters to you, it lives mainly in Shaw's hardwood, so check the origin of the specific style before you order.

Where Is Shaw Flooring Genuinely Strong?

Shaw's clearest strengths are water-resistant real hardwood, a deep bench of 20 mil vinyl, pet-stain and waterproof coverage in writing, domestic hardwood manufacturing, and published certifications.

Water-resistant hardwood, honestly labeled. Repel is on 63% of the Shaw hardwood we carry, and Shaw doesn't oversell it. Repel has its own dedicated warranty document, which covers moisture from normal cleaning and everyday household spills, and it states plainly that the floor is water resistant but not waterproof, that spills should be dried immediately and that standing water should never be left on the floor.^{Source 8} Pebble Hill Mixed Width in Canyon, a Repel hickory at $7.99 per square foot, is a representative pick.

A 20 mil wear layer where most shoppers land. Of the 215 Shaw vinyl SKUs we carry, 148 have a 20 mil wear layer. Waterproof and pet-stain coverage in writing. Shaw's standard residential vinyl warranty (document 28855) goes beyond defects and wear: it covers waterproof performance against normal spills, cleaning and typical subfloor moisture, and its Petproof clause covers permanent staining from domestic cat or dog urine, feces and vomit.^{Source 15} The warranty section below shows which Shaw floors carry it.

American-made hardwood. Three out of four Shaw hardwood SKUs we carry list the United States as their country of origin.

Published certifications. Shaw says nearly 90% of the products it manufactures are Cradle to Cradle Certified, and that all Shaw hardwood is GREENGUARD certified.^{Source 16} In Shaw's product data for our catalog, GREENGUARD language appears on at least 142 of 190 hardwood SKUs and FloorScore language on at least 29 of 215 vinyl SKUs. When Is Shaw Not the Right Choice?

Shaw isn't the best fit in five situations, and none of them is about build quality. Each is about matching the floor, and its warranty, to how you'll live with it.

You want thick-veneer, luxury-tier hardwood. With a 1.2 mm veneer on 93% of Shaw hardwood SKUs and only one style at 4 mm, Shaw Floors isn't built around the heirloom-hardwood brief. The Shaw family's higher-priced hardwood is Anderson Tuftex, and Anderson Tuftex vs Shaw hardwood shows where the step up earns its price.

You need hardwood in a room where water sits. Repel's warranty covers everyday spills, and it specifically does not cover subfloor moisture, water seeping through seams, standing water or moisture accumulation.^{Source 8} For bathrooms, laundry rooms and other spaces where water can pool, a vinyl floor fits better, and Shaw labels its Classic Series, Pro Series and Pet Perfect vinyl 100% waterproof.^{Source 10Source 11} Our waterproof flooring explainer sorts out the terms.

You're flooring a basement you can't keep in range. Shaw says most of its hardwood can go in basements when proper conditions are met, recommends 65°F to 75°F and 35% to 55% humidity, and tells you to check its installation guidelines before you commit to any subfloor.^{Source 18} The National Wood Flooring Association's standard for wood over concrete asks for a slab that's flat to 1/8 inch within a 6-foot radius (or 3/16 inch within 10 feet), dry by moisture testing, at least 3,000 psi, clean and without cracks or hollow spots, and it strongly recommends a vapor retarder with a perm rating of .13 or less.^{Source 19} If your basement can't meet that, see our best flooring for basements guide.

You expect the warranty to pass to the next owner. Every Shaw, Anderson Tuftex and COREtec residential warranty document we reviewed is non-transferable and extends only to the original end-use purchaser.^{Source 15} If you're renovating to sell, choose on looks and specs, not on warranty length.

You want pet scratches covered. Standard coverage doesn't include them. Shaw's hardwood warranty says scratches and dents in the finish aren't surface wear.^{Source 20} Anderson Tuftex's hardwood warranty excludes pet-claw damage.^{Source 21} COREtec's vinyl warranty excludes scratches unless separately covered.^{Source 22} And Shaw's Petproof clause is a stain promise, not a scratch promise. The exception is Pet Perfect, whose Pet Perfect Promise says Shaw will replace your floor if your pet scratches it. What Do Shaw's Warranties Actually Cover and Exclude?

Shaw's residential warranties cover manufacturing defects and wear-through, most Shaw vinyl adds waterproof and pet-stain coverage, and every document is non-transferable, covers labor only briefly, and excludes moisture from below, sunlight fading and wet mopping. The details depend on which document governs your floor, so here are all six we read.

Two Shaw vinyl documents look nearly identical and aren't. Document 28855, titled "Defects, Wear, Waterproof, Petproof," covers manufacturing defects such as delamination, core voids, thickness variation and dimensional-stability defects beyond ASTM tolerances, wear-through to the pattern layer under normal foot traffic, waterproof performance, and Petproof staining.^{Source 15} Document 28854, titled "Defects, Wear," covers manufacturing defects and normal wear-through only. It has no waterproof or pet clause, and it lists flooding and subfloor moisture emissions among its exclusions.^{Source 23} It governs only a couple of the Shaw vinyl products we carry, but it's the best argument for checking the warranty of the exact style you're buying rather than assuming one warranty covers the whole brand. Hardwood wear coverage has a high bar. Shaw's standard hardwood warranty covers manufacturing defects and finish wear-through only when the wear affects at least 70% of the installed surface, and it states that gloss reduction, scratches and dents in the finish are not surface wear.^{Source 20} Anderson Tuftex's hardwood warranty follows the same structure and adds exclusions for moisture damage, natural wood variation, UV fading, humidity-driven cracking and pet-claw damage.^{Source 21} COREtec's vinyl warranty closely mirrors Shaw's document 28855, including its Petproof clause, and excludes fire and burns, flooding, excessive subfloor moisture, castor-chair indentation, sunlight-driven color change and scratches.^{Source 22}

What every document excludes. Across all six, the recurring exclusions are fading or color change from sunlight, damage from subfloor moisture emissions or hydrostatic pressure, flooding, standing water and plumbing leaks, improper installation or maintenance, wet or damp mopping, and natural wood characteristics such as grain and mineral variation or seasonal checking.^{Source 8}

Labor coverage ends early, and the term lives on the spec sheet. Under Shaw's and COREtec's vinyl warranties, labor for a repair or replacement is covered only within the first two years; after that, coverage is limited to replacement material or credit, and the hardwood documents follow the same two-year labor pattern.^{Source 22} For Shaw's standard hardwood and COREtec's vinyl, the warranty document doesn't name the term at all. It points to the limited warranty period stated on the product specification, so "lifetime" or "50 years" is something you confirm on the style, not in the warranty text.^{Source 20}

You have obligations too. Keeping hardwood coverage valid means following Shaw's installation guidelines and care instructions, including holding indoor relative humidity between 35% and 55%, fixing subfloor moisture before installation, using protective pads under furniture and cleaning only with Shaw-approved products.^{Source 20}

Choose Shaw if you want dependable, well-documented hardwood or vinyl in the mainstream price range and you're comfortable reading the warranty for your exact style. Look elsewhere in the Shaw family if your brief is luxury hardwood.

• American-made hardwood matters to you.
