What Is the Best LVP for Pets? Wear Layers, Scratches and Accidents (2026)

Quick answer: For most dogs we'd choose LVP with a 20 mil (0.5 mm) wear layer; for cats or one small, calm dog, 12 mil (0.3 mm); and for several dogs or one large, high-energy dog, 22 or 30 mil. Pair it with a Petproof warranty: Shaw's and COREtec's standard luxury vinyl warranties both promise the floor will resist pet urine, feces and vomit stains for as long as you own it.^{Source 1Source 2} The thickness advice is ours, not theirs: neither warranty assigns a wear layer to a household, and both exclude surface scratches at every thickness.

Pets test a floor in three ways: nails on the surface, accidents that sit until someone finds them, and the same path from the back door to the water bowl walked every day. This guide answers each one directly, using Shaw's and COREtec's own warranty documents and the 458 luxury vinyl colorways we carry as of October 2026.

What should you look for in LVP for pets?

Look at four things, in this order: wear layer thickness, surface finish, the warranty document, and how quickly you can clean up. Here is what each one does in a pet household.

Is a 12 mil wear layer enough for dogs?

For cats or one small, calm dog, yes: that is where we'd choose a 12 mil (0.3 mm) wear layer — what this means. For most dogs we'd choose 20 mil (0.5 mm), and for several dogs or one large, high-energy dog, 22 or 30 mil. Here is our recommendation by household:

• Cats, or one small, calm dog: 12 mil, especially in bedrooms and rooms the pets pass through rather than play in.
• Most dogs, including one medium or large dog: 20 mil, our default for a busy household.
• Several dogs, or one large, high-energy dog: 22 or 30 mil. Thirty mil is the thickest wear layer either brand offers in our catalog.
• 6 mil: not for a home with dogs. We'd keep it for light-use rooms such as a guest room or a closet.

Why we draw the lines there. The wear layer is the clear material that takes the wear. Shaw's and COREtec's wear warranties promise the floor won't wear through to the printed design layer under normal use, and they define normal use as light to moderate foot traffic.^{Source 1Source 2} So where a floor works harder, we'd want more of it: a 20 mil layer is 0.5 mm, 67% more than 12 mil, and a 30 mil layer is 0.76 mm, 2.5 times as much.

What the warranties don't do. This is our recommendation, not the manufacturers'. Neither warranty assigns a wear layer to a household or a room, no thickness gets a different definition of normal use, and surface scratches are excluded at every one. A thicker wear layer is more material to wear through. It is not scratch-proofing.

What 12 mil still gets you. Pet-stain coverage isn't reserved for thick floors. Shaw Endura Plus is a 12 mil floor at $2.99 per square foot on Shaw's Petproof warranty document, with a 30-year residential warranty shown on 15 of its 17 colors.

Choosing 20 mil doesn't narrow your options either. It is the most common wear layer we carry: 317 of our 458 active LVP colorways (69%), across 36 styles from both brands, starting at $3.29 per square foot.

How long does a 12, 20 or 30 mil wear layer last with pets?

The numbers manufacturers actually publish are thickness and warranty term, not years with a dog: 30 mil (0.76 mm) is 2.5 times the wear layer of 12 mil (0.3 mm), and 20 mil (0.5 mm) is 67% more than 12 mil. We found no Shaw or COREtec document that puts a years figure on any wear layer under pet traffic, so treat any such figure you read as an estimate, not a spec.

Here is the thickness math and the published wear warranty terms for two floors we carry:

• 12 mil, 0.3 mm: Shaw Endura Plus shows a 30-year residential warranty on 15 of its 17 colors.
• 20 mil, 0.5 mm (67% more than 12 mil): COREtec Pro Classics carries a lifetime residential wear warranty and a 15-year heavy commercial wear warranty.^{Source 3}
• 22 mil, 0.56 mm (10% more than 20 mil): offered only by COREtec in our catalog.
• 30 mil, 0.76 mm (2.5 times 12 mil, 50% more than 20 mil): the top of both brands' ranges in our catalog.

Read those terms for what they promise. The wear warranty covers wear-through under light to moderate foot traffic, whatever the thickness. Choose the wear layer for the household you actually have, and treat the warranty term as coverage for ordinary traffic, not a promise about dogs.

Can dog nails scratch vinyl plank?

Yes, dog nails can scratch luxury vinyl plank, and the standard Shaw and COREtec warranties don't cover it: both exclude surface scratches unless a scratch warranty applies, and none of the LVP we sell comes with one.^{Source 1Source 2} So what you can compare is on the plank itself, and two attributes describe it.

Wear layer thickness. The wear layer is the clear material above the printed wood design. More of it means more clear material between a nail and the print, which is why our recommendations above scale with the size and number of dogs. It doesn't make a floor scratch-proof: a mark in the clear layer is still a mark.

Surface finish. Shaw lists the same ScufResist finish on 12 mil Endura Plus and on 30 mil Titan HD Plus Platinum, a 2.5-times difference in wear layer.^{Source 4} Finish and thickness are two separate decisions. A named finish on a thin floor doesn't make it a thick floor, so check both lines on the spec sheet.

What about texture? Embossed-in-register (EIR) means the grain you feel is lined up with the grain printed underneath it, rather than a texture pattern that repeats on its own. OnFlooring describes the payoff as a more realistic wood look and a more natural feel underfoot.^{Source 5} ASTM F1700 classifies vinyl tile and plank surfaces as Type A (smooth) or Type B (embossed).^{Source 6} Treat texture as a look-and-feel choice. For nails, the two lines to compare are the wear layer and the finish.

The strongest scratch claim in Shaw's vinyl range belongs to its Pet Perfect line, which Shaw says is 50% more scratch resistant than traditional luxury vinyl thanks to its PawDefense surface.^{Source 7} We don't carry Pet Perfect, and we explain what it is further down.

Will dog urine damage vinyl plank flooring?

Dog urine will not permanently stain the surface of a Shaw or COREtec plank on the Petproof warranty: both brands warrant the floor to resist pet urine, feces and vomit stains for as long as you own it.^{Source 1Source 2} The risk isn't the face of the plank. It's liquid that leaves the surface. Here is how the warranty documents treat each part of the floor.

The plank surface. Covered. Stain resistance for pet urine, feces and vomit runs for as long as you own the floor, and the waterproof warranty covers topical moisture on the surface.

The room's edges and cut boards. The waterproof warranty covers topical moisture only as long as the water doesn't flow over the edge of the surface, and it names the edge of the room and cut boards as examples.^{Source 2} A puddle that runs to the wall, or reaches a cut plank at a doorway, is outside that promise.

The click-lock — what this means joints. The waterproof clause draws its line at liquid staying on top of the floor. Treat the joints between planks the same way: the goal is to get an accident up while it is still on the surface.

The attached pad. Some floors have a pad bonded to the back of each plank, like the attached cork underlayment on COREtec Pro Classics.^{Source 3} A pad sits below the surface, so liquid that reaches it has already left the topical moisture the waterproof clause is written around. The subfloor — what this means. Both warranties exclude excessive or standing moisture that reaches the subfloor, and moisture coming up from the subfloor, and both say every source of subfloor moisture should be fixed before installation.^{Source 1} If liquid has soaked through, the EPA's guidance for wet building materials is to dry them within 24 to 48 hours to avoid mold growth.^{Source 8}

How fast do you have to clean up a pet accident?

Start the moment you find it. Both Petproof documents say cleanup should begin immediately upon discovery, and that the more time passes before removal, the harder a stain will be to remove.^{Source 1Source 2} Notice the wording: the instruction is tied to when you discover the accident, which is the realistic standard for anyone who comes home to one after a long day.

How do LVP warranties treat pet damage?

Shaw's and COREtec's standard luxury vinyl warranties cover pet stains for as long as you own the floor and exclude pet scratches, and the two documents are word-for-word identical apart from the brand web address in the footer.^{Source 1Source 2}

We used to describe COREtec as the exception on pet stains. Read side by side, it isn't: this is Shaw Industries' own warranty template, used on both brands' resilient floors. COREtec does put it front and center, marketing Pro Classics with a "100% waterproof, kidproof, petproof guarantee."^{Source 3}

Here is what the document says, attribute by attribute:

• Pet stains: covered. The floor is warranted to resist staining from a domestic cat or dog, including urine, feces and vomit, for as long as you own it.
• Scratches: not covered. Surface scratches are excluded unless a scratch warranty applies, and none of the LVP we sell has one.
• Wear: covered under normal use. No wear-through to the design layer, with normal use defined as light to moderate foot traffic.
• Water: topical only. Moisture that flows over the edge of the surface, or standing moisture that reaches the subfloor, is excluded.
• Conditions: installation and care. Coverage depends on installing the floor to the company's installation guidelines and maintaining it to its care recommendations. The text does not make product registration a condition of coverage.^{Source 2} Our LVP installation guide walks through the install.
• Transfer: none. The warranty extends only to the original purchaser who owns and occupies the home.^{Source 1} If you buy a house with LVP already down, the manufacturer's warranty doesn't come with it.

How many floors it covers. Of the 215 Shaw Floors LVP colorways we carry, 212 are on that Petproof document. The other 3, all colors of Infinite SPC, are on a separate Shaw warranty that covers defects and wear only, with no waterproof or Petproof section at all.^{Source 9} Coverage doesn't depend on thickness: it applies to 12 mil Endura Plus, and all 25 of COREtec's 22 mil colorways are on COREtec's Petproof document. What about Shaw's Pet Perfect line?

Shaw's Pet Perfect luxury vinyl carries the only Shaw-family LVP warranty that covers pet scratches, and we don't carry it. It's worth understanding anyway, because you'll likely see the name while you shop.

• It's a separate collection. Shaw divides its whole luxury vinyl category into three top-level groups: Pet Perfect Luxury Vinyl, the Classic Series and the Pro Series.^{Source 10}
• PawDefense is the surface technology. Shaw's 50% claim compares Pet Perfect with traditional luxury vinyl, not with a named competitor or a standard.
• The AKC endorsement is scoped to Pet Perfect. Shaw's American Kennel Club page covers Pet Perfect carpet, luxury vinyl and laminate, not Shaw luxury vinyl in general.^{Source 11}
• The Pet Perfect Promise is the contract. It adds 30-year scratch coverage, defining a covered scratch as a permanent break or score, not removable by cleaning, caused by a sharp or pointed object. It also carries limited lifetime coverage for all pet stains. Coverage is limited to replacing the damaged planks, not the whole floor.^{Source 12}

Here is what we'd choose, by household. Pick the wear layer for your pets first, then the look. Every floor below is one we sell, with its price per square foot and the warranty it names.

We'd choose 12 mil for cats or one small, calm dog

• Shaw Endura Plus (0736V), $2.99. 12 mil, ScufResist finish, Shaw's Petproof document, and a 30-year residential warranty shown on 15 of its 17 colors. We'd use it in bedrooms and guest rooms.

We'd skip 12 mil if your dog is large, you have more than one dog, or the floor runs through the main path to the back door.

We'd choose 20 mil for most dogs

We'd choose 22 or 30 mil for several dogs or one large, high-energy dog

Both are thicker than our 20 mil default: 22 mil by 10%, 30 mil by 50%. Choose between them on the plank and the look.

What color LVP hides pet hair and scratches best?

Medium-toned wood looks hide pet hair, dust and minor scratches better than very light or very dark floors. This is preference-level advice, but it makes a real difference day to day.

Go medium. Pale, white-washed floors show every clump of shed hair and every fine mark. Very dark floors show dust, paw prints and water spots. Mid-oak, hickory and walnut tones sit between the two.

Pick grain variation over a solid color. Planks with visible grain and some tone variation camouflage small marks better than a uniform surface does.

Match the floor to your pet, not only your furniture. A white dog on an espresso floor, or a black cat on a pale oak floor, will show every shed hair.

What should pet households skip?

Skip 6 mil wear layers for dogs, and skip the four assumptions below.

• 6 mil for dogs. It's the thinnest wear layer we carry: 11 colorways, all Shaw Floors, at 0.15 mm. We'd keep it for light-use rooms such as a guest room or a closet, not for a home with dogs.
• Treating a finish name as a wear layer. The same ScufResist finish appears on 12 mil and 30 mil Shaw floors, so read the mil number separately.
• Reading "waterproof" as "anything goes." The waterproof warranty is written for topical moisture, not liquid that runs off the edge or reaches the subfloor.
• Expecting the warranty to handle scratches. On standard Shaw and COREtec LVP, it never does.
• Assuming a floor in a house you buy is under warranty. Coverage stays with the original owner-occupant.

On warranties, the story is simpler than most guides make it. Shaw's and COREtec's standard documents both cover pet stains for as long as you own the floor, and neither covers scratches or assigns a wear layer to a household. So choose the wear layer for your pets, check the finish as its own line on the spec sheet, and clean up accidents the moment you find them.
