How It Compares

How COREtec Compares

COREtec vs. Lifeproof: COREtec invented the rigid-core waterproof LVP category. Lifeproof (Home Depot's house brand) followed with similar rigid-core construction. COREtec's edge is the patented core structure (originally patented in 2010) and broader style range across multiple product tiers — Originals, Pro, Plus XL — versus Lifeproof's narrower selection.

COREtec vs. Shaw LVP: Shaw's resilient flooring line covers a wider price range than COREtec — from value-tier products under $3/sqft to premium 30-mil wear layer products. COREtec sits in the middle-to-premium tier, with its flagship Originals Premium line specifically engineered for high-traffic homes and commercial-grade durability.

COREtec vs. Standard LVP: Standard luxury vinyl plank uses a flexible PVC core that can expand and contract with temperature and humidity. COREtec's rigid SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) core won't swell, buckle, or warp — even in kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. It's the construction difference that makes COREtec genuinely waterproof versus 'water-resistant.'

COREtec FAQs

Who makes COREtec flooring?

COREtec was founded in 2012 by USFloors and was the first SPC (stone polymer composite) luxury vinyl plank brand. USFloors was acquired by Shaw Industries in 2016, and COREtec is now manufactured in Dalton, GA. The original COREtec product line is still sold today under the Originals collection.

What's the difference between COREtec Originals, Pro, and Premium?

Originals is the legacy collection — narrower planks, 12 mil wear layer, classic styling. Pro Classics is the mid-tier — 20 mil wear layer, modern wider planks like 9" × 73". Pro Premium uses thicker SPC cores for the most durable construction. Premium tier features the longest wear layers and largest plank sizes.

Is COREtec flooring waterproof?

Yes — 100% waterproof on every COREtec style. The SPC (stone polymer composite) core does not absorb water, expand, or warp. COREtec is rated for installation in bathrooms, kitchens, basements, and any other moisture-prone area.

Does COREtec cover pet damage?

Yes. COREtec includes a pet warranty on most residential styles — typically covering pet urine staining, scratching, and chewing damage at standard household exposure levels. Coverage details vary by collection; the Pro and Premium tiers carry the strongest pet coverage.

Can COREtec be installed over existing flooring?

Yes, in most cases. COREtec is a floating click-lock system and can install over most existing hard surfaces (vinyl, tile, hardwood, concrete) as long as the subfloor is flat and structurally sound. Carpet must be removed first. Attached pad on most COREtec styles eliminates the need for separate underlayment.
