The Shaw luxury vinyl plank we carry comes in two series: Luxury Vinyl Classic Series, 11 styles at $4.19 to $8.19 per square foot with wear layers from 12 to 30 mil; and Luxury Vinyl Pro Series, 10 styles at $2.99 to $6.29 per square foot with wear layers from 6 to 20 mil. Another name, 5th and Main, turns up in searches but is Shaw's commercial line — it's carried by Philadelphia Commercial and specified through a territory manager, so we don't stock it.
What wear layer should I choose for Shaw LVP?
Our recommendation is 20 mil for a busy household: kids, most dogs, kitchens and entryways. We'd choose 6 mil only for light-use rooms such as a guest room or a closet, not for dogs or a busy household; 12 mil for bedrooms and lighter-traffic homes, for cats, or for one small, calm dog; and 30 mil for several dogs, one large high-energy dog, or the hardest-used floors in the house. The Shaw LVP we carry comes in wear layers from 6 to 30 mil. The wear layer is the clear top layer of the plank, the part that takes the foot traffic, and a thicker one has more of it to wear, so where a floor works harder we'd want more of it. That is our advice, not a manufacturer's, and it promises nothing about how a floor wears.
Is Shaw LVP easy to install?
Yes. Most Shaw LVP uses a click-lock floating installation that snaps together without glue or nails. The work is in the subfloor: Shaw's installation guides require it to be clean, dry, structurally sound and flat to within 3/16" in 10 feet. Shaw LVP can go over most existing hard-surface floors that meet that standard, including ceramic tile with grout joints up to 1/4" wide, but never over carpet.
